Emeraldo Grotto
Not far from
Amalfi, in the enchanting bay of Conca dei Marini, is the Emerald Grotto,
considered the jewel of the coast for its beauty and charm. Discovered in 1932,
the once dry grotto, later invaded by the sea due to bradyseismical movements,
owes its name to the unusual colour of the water reflecting the light that
penetrates off the rocks. The interior of the cavern, about 30 x 60 m with a
maximum height of 24 m, presents the visitor with an extraordinary, unequalled
scene: the atmosphere, dominated by brilliant green and blue, is made even more
fascinating by thin stalactites and above all by the spectacular formations of
stalagmites that emerge from the sea and, like huge columns over 10 m high, they
join to the roof. Finally, the original underwater ceramic crib submerged on the
grotto bed at a depth of about 4 m, is of great interest.
